Participated in a great conversation hosted by The Test Tribe The Test Tribe USA at the New York QA Meetup on what AI governance looks like in practice last week.
Governance is shifting from an external structure built around systems to a design principle embedded within them. Governance isn’t a layer around the AI system. It is part of how the system is designed. This includes designing boundaries, access, actions, autonomy, human oversight and telemetry into the operational environment, from the point of ideation and development through to deployment.
The same is true of human oversight. The question is not simply whether a human remains “in the loop,” but the proportionality of human judgment and accountability based on the level and nature of risk. That requires clear decisions about where AI can act autonomously, where escalation is required, and where accountability must remain human.
For organizations, this moves the AI governance conversation beyond policy and compliance. It is a question of operating model and design thinking and this is the area of particular significance: how institutions design and embed governance into the architecture and operation of AI-enabled systems.
